PROFILE: Teignmouth
The historic port of Teignmouth is situated at the mouth of the River Teign, the origins of which can be traced back on to Dartmoor.
Teignmouth has all the attractions one would expect of a traditional seaside town, including a pier, dating back to Victorian times, a working harbour, with a variety of vessels constantly using the port. Large cargo ships, fishing boats, pleasure craft and private boats are always coming and going, using their skills to negotiate the narrow entrance.
The town is full of character from the seaward side where The Den, with its play areas, bowling green and decorative flower beds separates the sea from the Georgian façade leading to the shops.
Here you will find a mix of national stores and a host of locally owned businesses.
The estuary side of the town provides a completely different view of Teignmouth, with waterside pubs and restaurants, boats for hire, shell fishermen and a beautiful view across the river to the village of Shaldon.
Along the coast to the east is the town of Dawlish, which also boasts many locally owned shops, inns and restaurants. This is the home of the famous black swans, that swim elegantly on the Brook, which runs through the town.
Just a mile away is the lively holiday resort of Dawlish Warren, with its host of holiday camps and accommodation.
Both towns are served by the main railway line from London, the North and the Midlands and there is easy access to the M5 motorway.
